Do to others what you would have them do to you

Many of us may know the Golden Rule, “Do to others what you would have them do to you”, but do we follow it? To my understanding, no one is born deliberately wanting to steal, lie, bully, curse, or kill but we still do it even though we know what is right. Though some may think it’s easier to do the wrong thing, it is always better to do what is right because everything has a consequence. So the following are some key factors to have and implement in your heart for the betterment of your life.

Firstly, we have honesty. This is one of the main characteristics a person should have. If you are not honest with those around you then how could they be honest with you? Lying may seem as the simplest and most suitable choice to make, but after one lie another follows and soon the truth will come out when you slip up. Things that are hidden will always come out, no matter how small or big they may be. Also, when you lie and the truth comes out, you may lose the trust of everyone, and it may be hard to retrieve it again.

Secondly, there is love. One of the most important traits an individual should have is love. However, love isn’t only for your family or friends, it is for everyone. You may never know what a person is going through at home, school or work, and if you show them hate then it worsens their day even more. Showing love doesn’t only have to be with words, it could be little actions like a smile or a simple greeting, for example, “Good morning” or “Hi, how are you?”

Thirdly, there is respect. To me, this is very important for ourselves and those around us. Respect is not just for people you see or know; it is for you as well. Some ways to respect yourself are: i) being around positive people; ii) taking care of your body; and iii) having clean thoughts, words and actions. Also, ways to respect others are: i) listening and being genuinely interested in what they have to say; ii) being on time and calling if you are going to be late or absent; iii) being accountable to your family members and always letting someone know where you are; iv) encouraging others whether their day is good or bad; v) being helpful to everyone once it is needed; and vi) having manners wherever you go or to whomever you meet. These are a few that you should use on an everyday basis, and after some time you will see the difference and improvement in your life.

Lastly, we have generosity. In giving you shall receive; this is a code we should live by. All over the world there are millions of people who never know where their next meal is coming from, yet we have everything we could ask for, but we’re still selfish. At school, work, or outside on the streets, there are people who probably never had food for the day or week, or may wear the same clothes every day because they don’t have enough money. Although we know all of this, we never do anything about it. We pass by without even looking at them. So, if there is anyone who you know is suffering, just simply offer them a smile, talk to them, give them some food or water, or befriend them and trust me, they will be glad.

These four character traits are very significant to us and should be enforced in our lives. If we follow them, we will notice a difference in our lives as well as those close to us. There will be more positivity and joy embedded in our hearts and life would be easier no matter what obstacles come our way.
